Plastics disposed in the sea near the temple is polluting the environment and the visitors to the temple throw used carry bags which are harmful to the serenity of the shrine precincts. To curtail the menace of plastic near temples and preserve the cleanliness around them a programme was organised by the State Environmental Department and National Green Corps, Thoothukudi district. They conducted awareness about the use of eco-friendly bags.

As part of the awareness programme a rally was conducted in which students of government girls higher secondary school, Tiruchendur, participated.  When the rally reached the temple they formed a human chain and took a pledge with the temple staff to protect environment. Then devotees were handed over eco-friendly bags. Twenty-four dustbins were handed over to the temple to segregate the degradable and non-degradable waste. Volunteers distributed pamphlets containing message about the importance of an environment-safe yatra and to avoid plastic items. A cultural programme was performed by Arumbugal, an NGO based in Tirunelveli. Volunteers enacted a drama to eradicate plastic from pilgrimage sites.
