1.Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve Trust (GOMBRT)
The Gulf of Mannar region along with the coastal lines of India bordering Ramanathapuram,Thoothukudi,Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts in South West TamilNadu its well known for its rich biodiversing.Gulf of Manna Biosphere Reserve Trust (GOMBRT) is the Trust of Government of TamilNadu has formed with the purpose to properly conserve the region.
Arumbugal Trust in coordination and support of GOMBRT Ramanathapuram carried out the Eco development cultural awareness programmes in the Gulf of Mannar areas. These programmes were conducted in 41 Schools from December, 2015 to February, 2016. Around 18,450 students gained awareness about the importance of the Gulf of Mannar, the need to conserve its marine resources, the need to save its endangered species and the coral reefs, formation of Eco development clubs and its functions, alternative jobs and new entrepreneurship schemes for the fisher folk.
2.PLASTICS-AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
The Tamil Nadu Government Department of Environment Chennai implemented a novel awareness programme called ‘Message On Wheels-ill effects of plastic’, throughout Tamil Nadu. Arumbugal was one among its major partner which implemented the programme in 6 Districts of Tamil Nadu.
In order to create awareness about the ill effects of plastics and the large scale destruction of the eco system due to plastic pollution. A team of well trained professional folk artists were involved in this awareness generation program.
They covered 20 programmes in each district in two days per district. The programmes were held in Schools and public places like bus stands and markets. Wall posters, handbills, booklets, Table calendars were used as tools of awareness creation.
The programme was locally coordinated by District administration, Forest department, local NGO’S, NYK Youth clubs and Green Corps of the districts. The programme had a very good impact among the school students and the common people.
3.BIO DIVERSITY CONSERVATION & LIVELIHOOD IMPROVEMENT IN ALS
The Forest Department,Tamilnadu Government’s Kalakad Mundandurai Tiger Conservation Project implementing the project Bio Diversity Conservation and livelihood improvement in Agastiar malai Landscape (ALS). The project area covers 5 districts (Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar, and Madurai & Theni) around 513 villages in the Western Ghats part. Arumbugal is doing the cultural awareness and community mobilization part of this project. So for 101 awareness programmes were done under this project.
In all the villages the importance of Bio diversity conservation, the need for livelihood improvement of the forest dependent people, formation of Micro village forest committee (MVFC), strengthening the existing village forest committees were the major contents of the cultural awareness programme.30 micro village forest committee members in the villages were given training on formation & functioning of MVFC.
4. NATIONAL ENVIRONMENT AWARNESS PROGRAMME
Ministry of Environment Peace Trust Dindugal and Arumbugal Trust conducted National Environment Awareness Campaign in Kallanai School, Tirunelveli. Morning a mass plastic cleaning campaign was done with 150 Eco club students.
In the afternoon a seminar on impact of globalization was conducted in the school and 200 students participated in this.
5.DR.ABDUL KALAM DAY
Our past president and national leader Dr.Abdul Kalam expired on 27th July 2015 and Arumbugal Trust organized a condolence meeting in our office. Two saplings were planted on that day by Mr.A.Venkatesh IFS , CCF -KMTR Tirunelveli.
State Award For Arumbugal 2015……
Arumbugal Trust has received Dr.Gurusamy award (Best NGO in TamilNadu) for Environment conservation and Management by Department of Environment and Forests, Government of TamilNadu for the year 2014-15 from Hon.Minister of Environment, on 07.06.2016 at chennai. Principal seceratry Department of Environment &Forests, Chennai, Director Department of Environment , chennai were the other VIP’s felicitaed on the day. The District Collector Tirunelveli,Chief Conservator of Forests, KMTR Tirunelveli and all wellwishers of Arumbugal appreciated the efforts of Arumbugal.
